Today begins February's 3PT fam inquiry, where you sent me your questions and I'm going to bring you answers through the points.
Today's question is: "What are the best mushrooms to use medicinally?"
I always remember when I was learning about this topic, my professor said, "They're all great, even the cheap, white ones.."
That stuck with me and I love it because you know if you're eating mushrooms, from the most obscure, gourmet or found 100 feet under the ground truffles to "the cheap, white ones", you are receiving big time benefits.
So the short answer is that they're all highly medicinal.. largely because of the high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that all mushrooms carry..
but here are my favorite three and their unique benefits for mind and body.
Reishi
- Reduces anxiety (known as "nature's Xanax"!)
- Aids in weight loss as well as healing hair and skin
- Supports general immunity and kills cancer cells
Lion's Mane
The benefits of this cool looking shroom have everything to do with the brain.
- Fights dementia and memory loss
- Supports and speeds up healing after brain injury
- Reduces depression and anxiety
Chaga
Not as aesthetically pleasing as its counterparts, but just as valuable!
- Boosts energy
- Supports heart health
- Improves blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels
How to consume:
Fresh + cooked is always best, but definitely not always the most convenient.
A note if you're going for the freshies: The healing properties of mushrooms are activated with heat, so always at least lightly cook your fungi.
I love to use dried mushroom powders in my smoothies and like a brand called Om. You can also get capsules for even more convenience.
